Give the person a hand massage
5-10 minutes of hand massage can create a welcoming calm moment for you and the person with dementia. It can strengthen the relationship, as well as decrease agitation immediately. Physical touch from others are often lacking as dementia is increasing, and hands are a familiar way to be touched for most of us. Many older adults have dry skin, and it might be nice to use lotion. Sit down next to the person you are caring for. Support the hand underneath, either with one hand, massaging with the other, or with both, massaging with the thumbs. Use slow movements and stroke gently.
