Inappropriate dressing or disrobing
It’s not always possible to determine why a person with dementia choses to disrobe inappropriately. It is, however, possible to take note of when the person starts to fiddle with their clothes or tries to disrobe. Maybe you will notice a pattern.
Try to find out if the person has any discomfort.
It’s possible that their clothing is itching or simply too tight. Maybe they are too hot or find it difficult to move in the specific clothing. Sometimes it might be that the person has to use the bathroom or even believes they are in the bathroom.
Take care of comfortable clothing.
Pay attention to signals.
The person with dementia may start to tug at a zipper or fumble with buttons when feeling uncomfortable.
Sexual reasons could be the reason behind disrobing.
Maybe the person has intentions of fondling him-/herself and is unaware of or unbothered that this is unfit to do in public.
Try to keep calm.
Shouting or scolding may agitate the person.
Have a jacket or shawl with you.
If other methods fail or if you don’t see the signs in time, then you will have something to cover the person up with.
